SIGN

SPOTTING

Howard Ohlhous got his shots of the full wall of signs from the Schnectady AMTRAK platform (above and left). However, he advises that it is possible to glimpse the large Uneeda sign from your front seat, although you must have exactly the right angle.

Heading east on Erie Boulevard, the sign is visible from the first car at the light at State Street (lower left).

For years the Uneeda sign and its neighbors were screened by a newer building. Once the home of a newstand, this building was demolished after a fire on Election Day,1997.

Conceivably the yellow and blue patches on the wall are remanents of later signs blistered off by the heat of the fire. Ironically, these overpainted ads may have preserved the originals they were meant to replace.
